Kitchen aprons, What Are They Good For? Absolutely Everything!
For thousands of years humans have developed and made use of a wide variety of apparel for protection as well as visual communication and impact. They wear rugged pants and shirts, but the apron protects against ground-in dirt and snags from branches and rose thorns, and lends an extra layer of protection to their knees when kneeling. It is easy to see that that sums up the core reason why aprons are so ubiquitous today and that the same applies to the original applications of now vintage aprons. Humans like their clothes and desire to protect them from being destroyed. Humans also like their bodies uninjured, and sometimes unsullied, and often have a need for carrying items and tools which are not as well-fitted in shirt and pants pockets. The apron does all these things, with much greater convenience than coveralls.
In youth, most people in America, and other industrialized nations, are first exposed to apron use via their mother's kitchen apron. Sometimes Dad has an apron for cooking on the grill out back. These early introductions to the apron occur in the formative years and so these tend to become the type of apron that automatically comes to mind for most people at the mention of the world. It really is quite interesting when you think about the vast array of apron applications that come to mind with a little thought and recollection. There are lab aprons in school and heavy duty protective smithing aprons at the forge. In animal husbandry, the apron protects from a world of messes that pants and shirt can not hold up against.
Clothes are great, and humans have designed a dizzying variety of pants, shirts, and skirts, but the ever-helpful kitchen apron is humanity's best friend when it comes to extra protection and handy carrying of needed tools. Throughout history humans have designed aprons for utility beyond the capacity of clothes, and occasionally they are designed in a little visual stimulation.
